Sugar-free vegan tea latte recipe

The one thing I miss most about the outside world (other than seeing friends of course) is my daily outing to grab a tea latte.

I haven’t drank coffee in about 7 years. Coffee is super addicting - I found myself having to have it every morning or else I’d get caffeine headaches. I also liked my coffee with a ton of milk and sweetener, and liquid calories are a common way that we undermine ourselves in health. We keep track of food intake, but drinking sweet drinks is something most of us don’t notice. I knew I had to quit coffee (I hate being addicted to anything and having it control my life).

… So I tea lattes have been my go-to every since! Tea still has caffeine, but it’s a lot less, so I don’t have to have tea daily, and I don’t feel jittery if I have a few cups. In case you drink matcha, that’s a heavy green tea with a lot of caffeine and can cause addition too (it supposedly has antioxidants and anti-aging benefits, but it makes me extremely jittery and anxious, and you can get antioxidants elsewhere imo). I love everything about tea lattes. The whole ritual. Going to a cute cafe, ordering, waiting, and that first sip hitting my lips… mmm.

Now that we’re in quarantine, obviously I can’t go out to get my tea. So instead, I’ve perfected my at-home recipe, milk frother and all! It’s vegan, sugar-free, and a super healthy and delicious way to start your morning.

Here is the recipe so you can make it too:

Vegan sugar-free easy at-home tea latte recipe

Ingredients/tools:

Note: these are my favorite tea and oat milk brands for the latte. You can of course exchange for whatever you like, but in my trials, this tea has the best flavor, and this milk has the perfect amount of froth and natural sweetness. If you’re in LA, you can buy Happy Plant Oat Milk at Erewhon. Otherwise, Oatly or Califia Farms are both good options and more readily available.

Recipe:

  1. Heat up water in a tea kettle

  2. Put the tea packet in a cup (I love my KeepCup) and fill up the cup 2/3 full with hot water

  3. While the tea steeps, pour the oat milk into the frother (grab the milk straight out of the fridge so it’s cold, it froths best that way) - only fill up to the low line in the tea frother

  4. Once the milk is done frothing, take the tea bag out of your cup and pour in the milk (if there’s too much, I just add the rest once I’ve sipped down the latte a bit)

That’s it! Oat milk is naturally sweet, so you don’t need to add any sweetener, and earl grey has a robust flavor that’ll make this tea latte smooth and delicious.

Enjoy this at-home deliciousness, and make sure to tag me @juliaotest in your posts and stories when you use this recipe.
